Training and QualificationsThe training requirements for addiction counseling vary from state to state. It is extremely important that you establish exactly what is required in the location where you intend to work. Degrees in addiction counseling and substance abuse counseling are available at certificate, associate, bachelor and master level. Programs will vary, but in general they will combine the study of the scientific and medical aspects of addictive substances with the theory and practice of counseling skills. Addiction counselors may have to obtain a license or certificate to work, and may also undertake further study to obtain membership of a professional association. Job OutlookJob prospects for qualified addiction counselors should be very good. Counseling generally is an expanding area of employment. Some states have passed laws requiring addiction counseling and treatment instead of a prison term for people found in possession of illegal drugs, which creates further opportunities for addiction counseling. Appropriately qualified professionals in addiction counseling and substance abuse counseling will often work in government or federal agencies.
