Occupational Therapy Schools

occupational therapy schoolsPeople may require the services of an occupational therapist for many different reasons. Illness, accidents, and disability may cause physical, emotional, or mental problems that make it difficult for an individual to function day-to-day.

It is the job of an occupational therapist, an occupational therapy assistant, or a physiotherapist, to provide a range of therapies which help people perform tasks that most of us take for granted.

If you are considering a career as an occupational therapist, an occupational therapy assistant, or a physiotherapist then you will need patience, communication skills, and the ability to instruct people who may have difficulty in learning. You will also require to undertake formal training at an appropriate level

Training and Qualifications

At the present time an accredited bachelor's degree in occupational therapy is sufficient to permit you to sit the national certification exam which you will require to practice. From year 2007 a master's degree will be required.

An occupational therapy program will include courses in biology, and physical and behavioral sciences, as well as courses which focus on occupational therapy treatments. Your program will also include a six-month period of practical work to hone your skills in a real-world environment. If you wish to work as an occupational therapy assistant, then you will follow a certificate or associate degree by sitting (in most states) a national exam.

Job Outlook

As a qualified occupational therapist, or occupational therapy assistant, you can look forward to entering a rising job market. On average we live longer these days, and as we age we are more likely to encounter the health problems that will benefit from occupational therapy treatment. Your future job prospects should therefore remain very good.
